I've have cleaned and replaced a few phonographs spring before, but I cant seem to remove the shaft connected to the middle of the spring before removing it on this Edison ics model c. I thought of removing the spring with the shaft, but seems like a bad idea, I could easily damage the shaft. Any suggestions?

Just carefully remove the remainder of the spring from the barrel, while the shaft and outer gear are still attached.
Then you will have an easy time seeing what you're doing to remove the shaft from the exposed small end of the spring.

It's relatively impossible for you to ruin the shaft. You can leave it in, as suggested above, just be careful, as it will be more cumbersome to handle while attached.

Yeah, cleaned and regreased the spring yesterday, and it was quite easy. I was surprised at how small the spring actually was. The motor is running perfectly now, very lucky that the motor is as quiet as it is
