On Easter a group of friends and I went to my local park in Fort Greene Brooklyn and brought my victor V. A friend shot some pictures of his handmade bags with the phonograph. We were stunned to see how many people our age, (mid twenties) knew the music we were playing. We had people dancing while playing frisbee.

Cool! You've certainly had better luck than I have at generating interest in the hobby.

If you plan on doing this often you might want to look into purchasing a Victrola 50 or something a bit easier to carry around. Lugging that Vic V with it's heavy triple spring motor and that big horn must have been a bit of a chore. :)

That's cool!

I take my 50 out on the lawn all the time when guests come over. They all love it, and several have asked me to find them one - which gives me an excuse to buy more of them and tinker (no more storage room!) I'm on my third and fourth gift restorations now!

Some more pictures would certainly be in order!

U.S. Lakeside, perhaps you could retitle your thread, if that's possible, "Phonographs in the Outdoors" so Nate and I are not technically off topic? :monkey:

The Vic V was horrifically heavy to move. Not to mention we picked the part of the park farthest from the car.... I just carried it! I think a vic II would be better. People were certainly curious, the horn really helped boost the volume, however it still fell completely silent from about 40 ft away. I think the hills around absorbed sound.

I have officially dragged all my friends into my hobby and try to bring out a phonograph at any choice moment. I even got a car of people to go to Wayne!

This Thread reminded me of some real photos I have in the collection. Here are some outdoor activities portrayed back in the day.

The party in the park sounds like a good idea this summer.

I was surprised at how well a phonograph sounds outside.

Here's one " at sea" or at least on the water at Belle Isle park in Detroit...or rather in the river at Detroit...I should think about 1908. And you'll note that there are two canoes with which appear to be Columbias..and a spot light at the front. I've got another postal from Belle Isle showing the canoes and again there is one with a phonograph. One wonders if they were standard equipment. Can you imagine what fun it would be relaxing in a cushion filled canoe with a supply of discs at hand?
