What looks like a superb condition HMV 194 with very nice oak veneers coming up 22nd March 2019

Estimate £300 - £800 would be a steal at this price

It looks right for a 193 model which is the oak version of the 194 (mahogany)

Obviously it has been re polished but the veneers look nice for oak

The needle cups etc look like replacements as they should be painted gold as per the arm.

The soundbox should be a 5A and also painted gold, so the 5B is a later replacement. No matter they work fine. All soundboxes vary and it is fun to experiment with different ones.

It looks as if it has the oil bath motor as the lubricator lever can just be seen behind the arm.

I have a 194 and can say that these machines are truly glorious. Only the 202/203 models were larger but they are usually kept in the corner with the hen's teeth.
They represent the pinnacle of acoustic gramophone development and its a real pleasure to play 78s on them.

Here is the original 1930 HMV catalogue page

Not clear at all. Allow me....

Firstly, the auctioneers have incorrectly catalogued the machine as an HMV194 when it is actually a 193.

Secondly, the internal fittings of the 193 should be oxidised silver plate, not gold plate. The 194 had the gold plated fittings. It even says so in the catalogue pictured above!

Good point about the fittings. I hadn't noticed that and I only have a 194.

Looks as if it has a 194 tone arm then? and with the the wrong soundbox.
