I like the rather simple almost Craftsman styling of it, but I can't imagine it would sound too good with that grille on it...

It looks like a production piece with a home made grill. Any more pictures of the inside?

As compared to what? Do you know who the manufacturer is? Or what these parts should look like?
There were so many manufactures making cabinets that it's impossible to say.
An internet / forum search shows that Silvertone made a similar lid, as well as similar Craftsman styled grills.
It stands to reason others did too.

It looks like a Silvertone with a home made grill, or maybe one from another model.
This was Sears lowest upright cabinet model before you got to table top machines. I've seen several different variations of grills for it, but this just looks a little sloppy to me.

Looking at it on my computer instead of my phone, I can better see all the issues with the grille....That has to make it sound like @#$#*!
Thanks!

That grill style would only reduce the volume.
The sound quality is only as good as the condition of the record and the reproducer.
Naturally, a well functioning motor helps to regulate the sound being generated.

That grill style would only reduce the volume.
Wouldn't it also muffle the fidelity and make it sound "muddy"?

You're right.
