Actually, the old boy is checking out a Vitanola. Victor held the patent for doors over the horn, so you can spot a Victrola or a non-Victrola a mile away by whether or not doors over the horn are present. There are a couple of exceptions to this rule such as the Victrola 1-1 (with no doors) and the early Columbia Mignon (that does).

Speaking as a piano technician, five will get you ten that the thing in the left corner is the upright piano with it's back to the room and piece of fabric or tapestry to cover the unfinished soundboard and posts . This was rather a fad in the years around 1910. The reason being that it increases the volume of the instrument in the room. It's useful too if you want to use an upright piano as a room divider...which is why people do this today. Now what I want to know is where they are hiding the records for the Victor: behind the screen at the right??
