Pathé also made an Army / Navy model, less frequently found.

The platter and crank are secured on the underside of the lid and the reproducer / tonearm is secured by the clamp seen in the photo. Leather strap handles on each side makes the moving process easier, but it does weigh several pounds.

The diffuser speaker / horn is exceptionally loud.

This may have been identified in their catalog as an "Outfitter" or "Outing" model, if you happen to have copy of same.

That's very cool, Rod. I don't think I've ever laid eyes on one in the flesh. They must be quite rare, at least on this side of the Atlantic.

The ID Plate identifies it as Pathéphone Model 85. Many years ago there was another example listed on Ebay; however, it was a basket-case, beyond salvage, and didn't sell.

I'm hoping to find a catalog reference sometime.

Edison Collector/Restorer

Since I just sidetracked this thread a bit, I feel that I should contribute some pics that some have seen from recent Edison ARMY/NAVY Threads in recent years..

Edison ARMY/NAVY Models:

I have one of those Pathé “portable” models like Rod’s. Nothing about it suggests that it was intended for military field use, other than the fact that it is really too big and heavy to use for a family picnic, carried by dad.

However, it’s configured a lot like a steamer trunk and so might be intended for the travel situations where folks used them, like a transatlantic voyage or lengthy tour by train. I can see it used at a summer home, similarly. Definitely not something for regular portable use, unless one took servants along on such excursions.

Glad to see the record carrying box shown. It must have been very heavy like the Army Navy Model. I'm sure to transport the machine and record box required a squad of soldiers. Also, I hear that there was a Navy version of the Army-Navy painted Battleship Grey. I wonder if there are examples of these.

I've never seen one. My unrestored example is painted grey inside, beneath the motor plate. It's a relatively high serial number, suggesting that there were grey "cabinets" inventoried that were re-painted green when it became evident that demand for the grey version was low.

WOW!!!! This is really neat!!! You know, this reminds me of the movie, "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. Didn't they use a phonograph in the movie? If so, I never realized it.
