In 1898 Mr. Berliner solved the problem of having to re-record a song after a pressing plate wore out after ~1,000 copies. He would take the first pressing plate (the "father" or "master" matrix) and press copies of a soft, quiet material. These oversized, 8-½" "high-fidelity" pressings could then be used to make many, many more stampers. This was the birth of the "three step" or "mother" process. You will notice the higher gloss of the surface and fewer "pickle bumps" than a typical Berliner.

This reproduction was recently made from one in E condition and is of "The Directorate March" by Sousa's Band (23 ZZ). These are made of my shellac-compatible resin and are a great way to see exactly what fidelity disc records were capable of in 1898.

All copies are currently sold.
