Just brought home a bunch of cylinders from an auction and found this early Edison cylinder label without a portrait of Edison. also found one almost identical except it has the Edison portrait. Pretty cool!

I like the one without the portrait. Seeing Nipper on a logo was cute and nostalgic, but seeing Edison, not so much, (I have mixed feelings about Edison, so his portrait doesn't make his cylinders more desirable to me). Thanks for sharing.

Nice. How did you manage to scan them?

I rolled the cylinder case along the scanner bed as the scanner bar went across.

That is the first commercial Edison label from 1897. In 1898 they added the portrait of Edison to the label.

As far as I have been able to research the label without the photo is late 1898 at the earliest, but more like 1899 and the one with the photo 1900-1901, then it was a grayish blue red and black label in later 1901 that morphed into the first moulded label.

In Koenigsberg's Edison Cylinder Records, 1889-1912, he dates the first box label as 1899. I can neither confirm nor dispute that; just reporting.

Yes 1899 sounds correct to me to. When did Columbia first put the colorful label on their records. I have a George w Johnson laughing cylinder, circa late 1897, early 1898 (it is short and dainty, less than 2.150" in diameter and shorter than an Edison, dainty spirals) It has no label or sign of one on the original box. Later Columbia brown wax have thicker spirals and around 2.170" in diameter, when the change happened I am not sure, but those who have a variety of Columbia brown wax lets check this out and see! But I think that would be another thread.
