I'm looking for a nice original horn and front crane. I believe the correct one would be a 31” black Standard 10-panel straight horn. My serial model is 786174D (c. 1905)

I'm in Long Beach, CA USA

I would entertain a Cygnet with crane too if it is period-appropriate.

You should probably post your location as shipping a long horn can be surprisingly expensive.

You're right about the 31" 10-panel Standard horn being original equipment for your Standard D. This model was introduced in October 1908, and your serial number suggests production during the first half of 1909.

If your machine already has the holes drilled for a Cygnet bracket, that would be a good option (and a common upgrade done by many original owners), but if there are no holes for the bracket, I'd stick with the original configuration.

Good luck!

Thanks. I did check and there are no holes for the bracket mount but isn't there a rear-mounted crane that slides under like the front-mounted one?

By the time your Standard Model D was introduced, Edison had for a year been equipping most of its domestic Phonographs with flower horns and cranes. There's only one type of crane that was original equipment for your Standard D, and that was the Edison crane. Here's a picture of a Triumph Model B with that crane:

There was a line of under-the-cabinet cranes offered by the Tea Tray Company, but only the first of those featured the upper rod mounted from the rear of the machine. These first cranes are rather scarce. Here's a picture of one:

The slightly later Tea Tray cranes were popular and all of them mounted the rod from the front of the machine. These can be found nowadays without much trouble. Here's an example:

There were a number of other cranes that mounted the rod at the front of the machine, but Tea Tray had the only under-the-cabinet models.

Hawthorne & Sheble offered a crane that mounted on the rear of pre-May 1901 Edisons and Type A or Type C Graphophones. This was the No.4, but would not be appropriate for a machine built after 1901:

This is probably more information than you wanted, but hopefully it will clear up some confusion.
