Getting Started Cataloging My Records

Hi folks,
At the risk of beating a dead horse, I have probably five hundred old 78's, and I've become the happy owner of a couple decent Victrola's. Before I started reading this board, I just lumped all the records into one general catagory, little knowing how wrong I was! I have tons of Victor records, but a lot of Columbia, some odd-ball names, some 10", some 12", some very thick with only one side that plays (the other side smooth), some with grooves so tiny it looks like a standard needle wouldn't play them.
I'd love to start learning the general distinstions of the records era's, how they were recorded (lateral or vertical), and start sorting them into some sort of categorys. Where is a great place to start my quest, what are some good reads for this? I bought some great books on the machines themselves.
Thanks in advance!
Gary
