I picked this little petal horn up today from a buddy of mine. My vic 1 is a 8 inch turn table (small player) and this horn is 18" long and 17" wide. I had a small brass bell on it, but this one is neat as well.

To my question. This horn being so small I assume its for a vic 1, it fits the collar etc. I am just used to seeing these players with the brass bell, are the petals common?

Am I correct with my assumption?

Yes, the small Victor Flower horn was made for the Victor I. It is not commonly found. Hope this helps. Jerry B.

Thank you Jerry! I was hoping that is was right. It was cheap, so I couldn't really go wrong, but was not sure.

Hmmm... Perhaps made in the style but, I'm not convinced that the black flower horn is a "Victor" horn due to the petal shape and lack of ribs. Does it have a Victor decal or a patent pend mark?

The tucked-in petals and whatnot make it look perhaps like a Tea Tray horn that might have gone for a cylinder phonograph. It's at least in that style. Perhaps someone has seen a vintage catalog and can pinpoint it definitely...but that's just the first thing I noticed.

It's surely a pretty setup and the little 8" Victors are the perfect balance of precision engineering and cuteness. I've wanted a rear-mount Model E for a long time but haven't quite coughed up the cash...my big Victor III suffices, of course.

Does the bigger horn help the sound quality? Last I heard a small machine with the brass-bell horns, it sounded very tinny & "old" but hopefully the morning-glory horn can boost its fidelity.

I agree that the horn doesn't look like a Victor horn. Here are a couple pictures of my Victor I with the petaled horn.

I missed that! I hope the little horn has a Victor type connection at the small end.

The Tea Tray Company not only manufactured many (most?) of Victor's original equipment metal external horns, but offered a complete line of aftermarket horns for Victor. Here are a couple of pages from a 1906 T.T.Co. catalog:

Sorry I have been out of town.... Here is the end. It fits perfectly into the elbow (by retainer and size of the end cone). Its a neat little horn, definitely made for a victor ( from what it looks like to me) it may be a tea co horn. It does not have any markings on it, I wish it did.

It has not been altered (like for a cylinder) I had actually originally thought it was a "made " horn, but its some sort of original.

It does sound better than the bell horn that was originally on it. The bell was loud! but had almost a ring to it. This little horn mellowed the sound out, it sounds good! I think it looks good, like another other large vic machine but just proportional and small!!
