Unusual Herzog Half-Barrel Cabinet

I realize that Herzog used the same basic cabinet forms for cylinder, disc, and sheet music storage, but I encountered this unusual variation of sheet music cabinet the other day with an extended top. Anyone ever seen one like this before?

I've never seen anything like it. For what purpose? Why not a pull-out shelf? Shipping this would have been unduly expensive for Herzog.
Does the underside of the overhanging section have any marks to suggest that this particular cabinet was modified by a previous owner? If not, this is certainly an interesting (and puzzling) product!

Are there slots in the door? Looks to me like there is a piece added on the top and the rest shifted back. In my mind, a factory piece would have solid veneer over the entire top. no seams like show here. Certainly an odd looking cabinet in this configuration.

I'm with Gregg,,, slight mismatch of color on that center section... remove that and everything appears to line up..

Looks like they used it for a typewriter to me. A picture of the underside of the lid where it overhangs would tell you if the cabinet has been cut down. They put a rabbet on the underside of the lid for the sides to be glued to. It's always interesting to see what turns up these days, that's for sure. Earl

Could it be for large books. Like maps or large picture books?
Posting of dimensions help to determine its possible purpose.
