Hey y’all,

I have a pretty big classical collection, but dont have this concerto on 78.
I would assume that at some point an album was made with this concerto? Where should I go to find it? I would love to own a copy of this concerto. Does anyone know if this album was ever made?

If you mean his third piano concerto, the World's Encyclopedia of Recorded Music (Clough and Cummings) shows 78 RPM sets only for nos. 2, 4, and 5, the last being on Japanese Victor, by Japanese artists, and I would guess never released in the West. Violin Concerto no. 3 had a few 78 RPM recordings: Ruggiero Ricci (Polydor), Louis Kaufman (Disc), Zino Francescatti (Columbia, right around the transition to LP), and older recordings by M. Candela and H. Merckel (at least the latter, I think, being on HMV).

As far as I can see, the first recording of the third Saint-Saens piano concerto was by P. Pozzi and the Winterthur SO under Victor Desarzens on Concert Hall CHS 1179. That would have been an early LP.

As far as the piano concerti "missing" from 78s, the absence of no. 1 is something of a shame, as it's a lively, enjoyable work with an exciting finale. I wouldn't concern myself too much about no. 3, though: that one is the ugly duckling of the series, a work that I've always considered rather a bore.

I am referring to his violin concerto. Is there a place I can look to buy the album on 78?

One suggestion comes to mind, apart from the usual eBay, etc.

Also Darrell Lehman who currently sells 78s through the 78-c group, sold 78rpm classical albums to me the past. He might have what you want. Address is https://groups.io/g/78-C

Inigo, I wonder if you have the wonderful work, A Night in Madrid by Glinka? and also his Jota Aragonesa? I don't think much Glinka was recorded on 78s, and I'm not aware that these works were ever put on shellac.

I knew of other works by Scarlatti related to Madrid. He was official music man for the Court during the xviii century, and composed several works of this kind.

Yes I am talking about the violin concerto. I’ll have to check that out

I'm not aware of a 78 RPM "A Night in Madrid" (aka "Spanish Overture no. 1"), and I'm away from home and my WERM, but the Jota Aragonesa was issued in a Toscanini/NBCSO performance on V-Disc 593 (both sides). Both are flashy, colorful works and will repay your attention! I assume you know Rimsky-Korsakoff's Capriccio Espagnole, another enjoyable bonbon. I know of four 78 RPM recordings of that one, one even from the acoustic era (NYPO/Stransky on Columbia). From the electric era the ones I have are PSONY/Barbirolli, Boston Pops/Fiedler, and (alas, not all of) SFSO/Herz.

[edit] Having now returned home, I've had a look at WERM, and it indicates Jota Aragonesa also was issued in 78 RPM recordings by Philharmonia Orch./Malko on HMV 3878 and Moscow State SO/Orlov on USSR 14315/7. According to WERM, the same conductor led the Moscow Radio Sym. in "Memory of a Night in Madrid" on USSR 08245/6. US Brunswick had an earlier recording by "Concert Orchestra/Fuerst" as 77014.
