Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the Gakken Berliner machine uses a CD also.
That said... wonder how close to the RIAA curve that recording is.

I've recorded snatches of voice by yelling into the horn of an upright Victrola while the needle traveled over the runout groove of a 33rpm vinyl record. A small feedscrew attachment, blanks, and a cutting needle would probably do to convert a regular phonograph into a record lathe.

I've done similar with a CD on my Columbia portable. Track the reproducer across by hand. And it does play back, albeit quietly on a modern turntable.
