Edison P-3 on eBay

I think a P-3 in really rough condition was just listed on eBay, the case isn't great as it's missing the record holder, but it still has its reproducer.

I don't think "p-3" was it's official name, but more of a nickname. If I remember they were made by Prime Mfg Co, then again it could just be a random Prime portable that ended up with a late Edison lateral reproducer.

Frow shows a very similar machine in his Edison Disc Phonograph book, but notes that it was "just like those supplied to" other companies. There is an Edison branded record holder in Frow's one photo, not shown on this machine. I wouldn't mind seeing it in person, but the seller listed as "local pickup only".

Also, Frow refers to it as the "Needle type portable" and notes its introduction as January 1929, a few months before the P-1 and P-2, so it wouldn't be a "P-3" so much as a "P-0"...

This particular one is not in good shape but it does have the reproducer. When in nice shape these machines sound amazing. As good as any orthophonic Victor portable. If you ever had need of this reproducer it is nearly impossible to acquire. I had a P-2 a few years ago and loved it. But, I ran out of room and sold it. I have regretted it a few times. While they were not made by Edison, rather for Edison, they are not junk by any means.

I know Wyatt made a video of his with the wrong reproducer quite awhile back. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCzAXSWs1Y8)

From a previous topic it seems like it was made by Prime for Edison, it wasn't a great seller but generated a bit of buzz for him to design his own portable, such as the P-1 and P-2 not much later.
