2 SPRING BRUNSWICK 1917-18 I THINK

Post by bastmont »

Just completed a rebuild of this unit, no previous experience but lots of help from this web site. Thanks for the help. One more question. Everything back together, board installed back in case, wind up about 13 cranks and a clang from the motor area Sounds like spring is not catching. But can play a disc for about 1 minute and it slows way down to nothing.

Stripped it down again, beginning to know the inner workings of the spring case, it would appear that the spring that connects to the large gear is not catching on the retainer on that shaft can't see any way of getting it to slid on and stay. ANY SUGGESTIONS, please and thank you
Robin

Reads like you're describing that the innermost part of the spring wont catch on the winding arbor. This part of the spring isn't tempered and can be shaped a little with needle-nosed pliers if needed to get it to hook.

Yes you are correct I have attached 3 Pictures of the springs I think the problem is fairly obvious My other thought is are they wound in the correct direction The pix showing the two springs the top pix is the one with the large gear.

In the second photo, the spring on the left is wound the wrong way. When you have it out of the barrel it should be easy to shape the inner coil to hug the arbor. Use a dowel or a bolt that's a bit smaller diameter than the winding arbor and shape the coil with pliers. The dowel keeps you from crimping the coil.
