Sound Quality: Colonial HMV 113 v HMV 102

Out of curiosity, can anyone shed more light on the difference between sound quality for the HMV 113 and the HMV 102? I have a 102, but am thinking of also looking for a HMV 113 colonial. The sound seems fuller on the 113, but I just thought I would ask!

Thanks!

The HMV113 is basically a table model 130 in an Indian built "transportable" case. Most UK collectors rate the 130 as the best table gramophone ever made, so you should find the sound quality a noticeable advance over the 102 portable, good as it is. Good 130's sell here for under £200 but a good 113, if you can find one, will cost considerably more.

Garret, I have all the exclusive HMV colonial models made before 1940.

As epigramophone has said, the 113 is a 130 in disguise. It beats the 102 for sound but so does the 114 which is more closely related to the 102.

Did you spot my earlier thread about the special model Indian machine with oil-bath motor? That is effectively a 130 in elaborate disguise with extended horn.

I concur with Steve regarding HMV 102 vs HMV 113 sonic performance. The other advantage with the HMV 113 is that you can close the lid while (or whilst) playing.

While I love my HMV 113, it is no match against the large re-entrants and Orthophonics.

The HMV 102 wins hands down for portability. The HMV 113 is quite heavy! :|

Anyhow, thank you so much for the notes. I think I will be in the market for a colonial 113 soon...
