After some extensive work, veneer patching, water damage and more, i finally brought this 1918 Victrola XVII back to life. This is the most extensive restoration yet but i was determined to bring this one back to life, gorgeous veneer hiding under all that mess. I used Behlens walnut wood dye diluted 80% with acetone to match the original color.

How can it be "finished" without turntable felt? :P

Other than that... damn... really top work!

Yea, i put the felt in a safe place so it wouldnt get dusty but now cant find it. Other than the felt, yes it is complete.

The reason this one took 2 months to finish is that i originally used walnut stain and it obscured the grain to much, decided to start over after i had i had already clear coated. Wood dye was the way to go with walnut, not stain, to many pigments. I have done so many mahogany units that using stain seemed natural but turned out to be a big mistake and gave me a lot of extra work. In the long run, seeing the finished version like this was worth it. I wish i had photographed it with the stain before i striped it off for a comparison.

I really like the lighter finish. The grain looks awesome. I have an American Walnut XVII in a darker finish. I wonder if the lighter finish was originally offered.
