Got these on the freebies section of Craigslist today. The owner
got them for free himself some time back so he was just passing them
on. Really nice guy, made my day. :D Mostly stuff from the 30's-40's
I think, but there is a minty single-side Victor I found so far.
I am estimating there is around 300 in the lot. :D

Thanks Brad, I went through some stacks today and found 3 more one siders so far. Most
of them are WWII era Decas, Columbias, etc. Lots of earlier Victor black labels though
too. Lots of Andrew Sisters which I like. Still have those 2 big boxes full to sort
though so hopefully some more rare stuff will pop up. :clover:

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, or quell your excitement, but you may as well find out now. Single sided red label Victor discs (even with the embossed reverse) aren't at all rarities.

They may contain some fine music, though!

No problem! :) I am still a newbie when it comes to record values for sure. They are more rare
then the 2 sided ones though aren't they?

If you're strictly speaking of red label/seal discs from the Victor Talking Machine Company, not really. they were single sided all the way until 1923, before going to double, like the rest of the line already was and had been for about 14 years.

If you include all those records produced after RCA bought Victor in 1929, then, yes, they are more perhaps a little more 'rare.'

Oh ok, I thought the single sided ones were all made in the earliest part of 1900 and then later progressed to dual sided. I need to study up on my records I think! Thanks for the info! :)

Brad,

This was true until Victor started re-issuing single sided records in the 20's and 30's. In general, single sided discs from the early days will have a sticker on the blank side. (I could post a picture of one if you'd like).

I went down this very same path in my early days of collecting. Don't fret, before you know it, you will have more records than you can count and you won't know where any specific one is!

The best part is that you will have great practise during the three plus hours  it's takes to clean them..BTW,even though the Vic embossed ones are no big deal.....they are nice to leave on your turn table as a display and to protect your felt. With the Vic name up.

In other words, making new 2 sided couplings by reusing old metal stampers that were originally issued single sided and putting them out as new double sided records.

They did this much earlier on with the black label discs and such, reissuing certain pre 1909 single face sides, coupled with assorted others. Assigned new catalog numbers, you can accurately date them by the old matrix info in the deadwax.
