Wire for Edison Disc Player Volume Ball?

Does anyone know the best way to replace the wire for the tone modulator ball on an Edison Diamond Disc player (in my case, an A100)? Is it just bicycle brake wire, or is it something more specific?
If it's best not to replace it, can it be lubricated so it glides more smoothly?
I haven't been able to find anything about it anywhere.

Thanks!

Probably the “best” way to replace a mute ball cable would be to purchase an original replacement from a parts supplier like George Vollema at Great Lakes Antique Phonograph Repair. There’s really no need to lubricate a cable in good condition since it never moves much. If you’re trying to free-up a cable that may be rusty, soak it with penetrating lubricant like Kroil or Penlube for a couple of days. WD-40 is NOT a penetrating lubricant. Don’t use that garbage on anything on a phonograph.

My volume ball didn't travel evenly, and a few drops of sewing machine oil applied to both ends helped a lot.
