Is this the real Columbia Q horn?

I just bought this nickeled 10in Horn on eBay to put on my Columbia Q because it looked better than that beat up japanned cone horn I had. And I’ve seen photos of Columbia Q’s with this horn and I said “oh what the heck” and bought it. And I wanted to make sure I bought the genuine article.

How was the horn described on Ebay? Are there any imperfections or signs of age on the horn? I saw similar horns when I did an Ebay advanced search. The horns were described as new and many machines were suggested as good candidates for use with the horns. The ones I found sold in the $60 range. Are you asking if your particular horn is original? Or are you asking if small belled horns were offered or available back in the early 20th Century? Regardless, I'm sure it looks nice on your Q.

This is what the seller wrote:

THIS AUCTION IS FOR AN EDISON VICTOR COLUMBIA? PHONOGRAPH HAT HORN. I'M NOT SURE WHAT MODEL THIS GOES TO. MEASURES APPROXIMATELY 10-¾" LONG. GOOD LUCK BIDDING.

Andy, post a picture of the horn from the side.

These are the other photos the seller had of it. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's a repro because of the price I paid.

When you get it, show us the seam between the horn bell & the cone. That's the telltale spot.

From the picture of the small end, it appears to be a reproduction, but as JerryVan points out, the seam will be the critical factor.

I don't recall seeing a horn like this offered as standard equipment on a small Edison or Graphophone. But were they available from various parts suppliers?

Thanks, Jerry

10" nickeled horns were supplied with the QC Graphophone, the early QA, the AA, and the nickeled & polished Eagle (BXP). I've never seen one of these horns supplied with the Gem in the U.S.

Hey Jerry,

This is from an 1899 Columbia catalog. Under Nickeled Horns, you see this horn advertised - 10-inch brass horn, nickeled - $.75.

However, I have to agree with the prevailing experts, this one appears to much newer than from 1899.
