It's been a while since my last video, so here's another one for you. My other HMV 101, a special luxurious edition, covered in faux brown crocodile skin, playing Paul Whiteman's "Steppin' In Society", recorded June 3rd, 1925.

It's a nice little machine with good sound, but I have to admit that my other 101 (the plain black one) plays better, mostly because that one has the later 270 motor, which is stronger than the earlier 410. The 410 can barely play one side of a 12" record on a single wind, and especially with worn records or records with loud passages it can't keep constant speed.

Nevertheless, the brown 101 is a real eyecatcher, and it is 100% fully original. It even has the original handle. I doubt this suitcase gramophone has traveled at all, it probably was used at home as a table model.

It's a nice song and great looking phonograph. Thanks for sharing it. I have the same tune on a Columbia record.

I agree. Great tune and nice machine. I have the same tune on diamond disc by Bill Wynn's Greenwich Village Orch, (I think).

Things were certainly different in the 20s. Somebody wrote a tune and it seemed to immediately come out played by multiple groups and on multiple record labels as well.

It is indeed Billy Wynn and a great version with Collegiate on the flip! The Columbia recording by The Knickerbockers (Ben Selvin) is also great as is the Whiteman.

Sean, I agree that the Edison and Selvin renditions are great. I think the Selvin rendition is on the flip side of his recording of Charleston. I don't remember the Whiteman recording so I will click on the Youtube link above and listen to it.

Actually, Selvin's "Steppin'" is on the flip side of "Collegiate".

There is a Vocalion version, I meant to add to this the other day. I don't have it, I have the Columbia version with Steppin' in Society on the flip. The Vocalion disc is pretty scarce and the Original Charleston makes it really desirable to collectors.
