That's a very late production VV-100, according to the victor-victrola site. Nice dark oak cabinet. Priced too high??

Given recent prices observed, I think it is way too high. It's a fairly unremarkable machine, but it is oak. I would guess $200 or so (more or less) would be a more realistic price, given the current market. Just an opinion.

Were they made late enough to be fitted with a Victor #4 soundbox when they came out?

No, but the No. 4 was actually designed to upgrade earlier machines to play electrical recordings so it is at least an "approved" upgrade. The problem is that if that No. 4 is pot metal (which is most likely given the angled set screw) it could have real issues with crumbling.
