Aeolian Vocalion Graduola slow play/grinding noise

Hello, I’m new here. I just bought a Aeolian Vocalion Graduola today. It worked fine when the seller demonstrated. When I got home and tried to play a record, it was playing slow and there was a grinding noise. I removed the turntable part (I guess that’s what you call it?) and the rod/axel part that it sits on is making the grinding noise the entire time it’s moving. I thought maybe it just needs a new needle, but I’m thinking it’s some internal issue. Maybe just needs new grease? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

As with any century-old machine, a thorough cleaning and re-lubricating is a must.
Aside from that: if it was "working fine" before, but started acting up when you got it home, perhaps something got knocked out of kilter during transport.
Eric Reiss's "The Compleat Talking Machine" is an invaluable resource to any collector, and covers all aspects of restoration, repair, and troubleshooting. I hope this proves helpful.

Let us know when you have got your book! Pictures would be great when you're read up on it & starting to do your repairs.
