Latest find: Gem model C (with curious speed control)

Yesterday I was at the NC swap meet and A guy I met there offered me a gem, and when he lifted the lid I was surprised to see a black machine with double pinstriping. I look at the dataplate, and sure enough it was a model C, and so I took it home. As you may or may not know, the gem C is quite difficult to find.

I intend to try and replace the paint where it is missing, since the majority of the paint and decals is in great shape. One thing that I find curious about this machine is the fact that there is a hole for the speed control. I cant seem to find another example online, and so I thought maybe it is a variation of the ICS Gem. The ICS gems I have seem comes with an endgate and an extra large pulley. Any opinions on this?

My Gem Model C has the single striping and no extraneous hole on the left side. Model C has no endgate.

Jerry, I'm pretty sure I owned that single-stripe Gem from 1973 until 1995 (when I sold it at Union to help pay for something very expensive). If it's #289583, that's my old girlfriend!

George,

Yes, it is. :!:

I did buy it at Union around that time.

Well how about that?! Small world, isn't it?

In my notes I wrote that it was sold to someone from Dallas...

Well, should you ever decide to sell it, please let me know!
