The celebrated conductor Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961) was not a man to do things by halves. At his 70th birthday lunch the table was a 12 foot diameter replica of one of his records.

Telegrams of congratulation were read out from Richard Strauss, Stravinsky and Sibelius, after which Sir Thomas remarked "Nothing from Mozart?"
