Nice foxtrot, recorded 2/28/27 in NYC. Features Red Nichols, Miff Mole, with Harold Yates vocals. Acoustic recording, made at the end of the Edison acoustic era, really shows the full capabilities they had managed to achieve.

Spot on! Those very, very late (mid-1927) Edison acousticals are amazing. Yes, they worked right up to the end to maximize fidelity; they knew their system.

As for this piece, you could feel going in that it was going to break into a delightful run at the end.

There’s actually a somewhat fun backstory to this whole thing today.

The guy that recently sold the big Borgia II, now sees me as his phono consultant, so he approached me this morning asking what I thought of a stack of diamond discs that he has.

This was the one that stood out a little bit, compared to the rest. I looked it up, and found that I couldn’t find it online to listen to… So I went and found my copy and played it. I had never heard it before. It’s quite a peppy number, so I decided that I should put it up online for others to enjoy.

And there you have it!

Wow, you got that recording up here quickly if you just listened to it today (buried in your own collection). One would think you're in lock-down with time on your hands...

The one segment of my collection that is firmly under control is the diamond discs, filed in catalog number order, and with a spreadsheet for sorting. All that remains is to put that spreadsheet on the ancient 3rd-gen iPad that’s sitting otherwise unused somewhere, and set it next to the phono.

Everything else: chaos.

What's with us Diamond Disc-obsessed people, hey? I have a complete inventory (by catalog) in Word; hell, who needs Excel or other spreadsheets if you can word search. My disc count is 997.

My favorite "late late" DD acoustical is 51957, two hymns played on Edison's studio pipe organ. Same thing: You'd swear the sides were recorded electrically. Most folks don't buy the religious titles but I enjoy them as I'm a church organist.

I'm grateful when great Edison recorded foxtrots become available so I can add them to my collection. The mic worked great.

Here is the mic. I also use it to stream live music from concerts - from my shirt pocket. Quite good!
