Hi All,
Thx to Jerry Blais and his friend Stan who looked at and hauled a machine posted on the Portland CL from there to the CAPS show I now have my credenza. While the woodwork and the horn sealing is going very well I am missing the 2 motor board lift knobs and the gold plating may need some replacement. I am redoing the motor and lift cylinders and want to remove the tone arm from its base/mounting flange. This is a 4 door in the 17,000 range and does not have a pot metal mounting base. Anything to be careful of-and what do I need to do to to remove it from the base.

I waited for awhile trying to find gold-finish motorboard lift knobs for my Credenza, but finally tried using a pair of cabinet door knobs from a junked Victor X cabinet. They were nickle, but I used some gold spray paint, and the finished result looked pretty good to me. Walt Sommers (VictrolaGuy) has some reproductions listed on Ebay, and can put gold plating on. If you decide to do something with the tonearm finish, of course you'll have to use a method that will match the look of the rest of the motorboard hardware.

I have a Credenza with the earlier arm just like yours. (no pot metal. ) It's been a few years since I took it apart, but I seem to recall it was pretty obvious how it worked. Remove it from the machine by loosening the 4 bolts. I seem to remember that the arm came apart once I removed the 3 smaller screws on the black base and rotated it. Do this over a tray since there are some ball bearing in a race that will fall out.

Putting it back together was the reverse of taking it apart. Adjust the amount of play by rotating the base before tightening the 3 screws which fit through the oblong slots.

The main thing is not losing the ball bearings, although you can buy replacements at a hardware store.
