Help; Spring direction for 4 spring 2 barrel Victrola motor

I just picked up a nice 1917 Oak VV-XIV Victrola. I can tell someone else has worked on it because the motor parts and outside of the barrels are very clean and the Exhibition reproducer has supple gaskets. This machine has 4 springs and 2 barrels (2 springs per barrel with a disc separator). I noticed it plays a record only about half way and notice some slippage sound from one of the barrels.when cranking it. I took that barrel apart (the one next to the winding gear) and noticed that both 12 foot springs are wound counter clockwise. My understanding is that the bottom spring should be clock wise and the top spring should be counter clock wise. Can someone verify that my thinking is correct??? I just don't want to have to take the other barrel apart for verification :-)

Thanks,

AR

The springs in each of the 2 spring barrels install in opposite directions. In one spring barrel, the bottom spring goes in clockwise and the top one goes in counter-clockwise. The other spring barrel is just the opposite, with the bottom spring going counter-clockwise and the top spring going in clockwise. The slots in the gear arbors that engage the bend of the center coils of the spring will pretty much identify which arbor goes where. Install the winding gear in one spring barrel and the drive gear in the other spring barrel, then install the anchor arbors in the other end of each spring barrel. The anchor arbors slots are opposite of each other so be sure they are installed in the correct spring barrel.

Hope this helps! Cliff
