This is advertised for sale on Facebook in the UK. Does anyone know what the box is for? I know the Gramophone Company made special boxes for the transportation of recordings across the Atlantic. Could it be for that? I'd love to have your thoughts on this.

Oh, this is obviously a key accessory for the extremely rare HMV Squirrelogram, a squirrel-powered gramophone targeting the Lake District holidaygoers. It apparently failed in the marketplace, since few examples are known to have survived.

The breathing holes are the giveaway.
