The Talking Machine Forum — For All Antique Phonographs & Recordings

A few months back, I was asked by a fellow phono collector, who is also interested in antique cars, to talk about my phonos at his Model A Car club mtg. It was really fun to talk to others interested in antiques and there were lots of great questions. At that mtg, a gentleman introduced himself and asked if I'd come and do it again at a car club called the Katy Cruizers. They meet about 5 miles from my house so I was pleased to go there this evening and talk a bit about how recording changed over time, from tinfoil to orthophonic and electrically recorded diamond discs. We listened to some happenin' tunes- Uncle Josh buys an automobile, the Little Ford rattled right along and that old favorite, Please Don't Cut out my Sauerkraut by Jack Dalton and the 7 Blue Babies. It was lotsa fun for me to have a captive audience to listen to some tunes (I blocked the door so no-one could get out) and there were lots of good questions. I took 2 photos so here they are to show what I carted there. It was a bit dark, a meeting room at a restaurant, but you get the idea... The list: Edison Standard, French Parlor tinfoil, Vic M, Columbia AJ, Vic 6, Columbia AB, Amberola V, Edison C-19 Chalet.. I just didn't feel like loading the 10-50 so please forgive me!!

What a great evening you must have had ! You have a great demonstration of various machines and I'm sure the crowd has the rendition of "Little ol' Ford Rambled right along" rattling around in their heads for days to come. It's one of those songs you just can't shake off.

I just received "Henry's made a Lady out of Lizzie" on blue amberol today from an eBay purchase. It will be in my collection for many years to come since I enjoy antique cars.

Nice job tying up collector car members to the sounds of great old recordings. They will remember this evening many times. A picture is worth a thousand words, but an audio memory will last far beyond that.

Did you convert anyone to the phonograph hobby or did you end up buying an antique car. It looks like you definetely put some love into your presentation. Neat!

What a wonderful evening. It sounds like it must have been alot of fun.

Great that they seemed to be interested too but I think it was a good idea to block the door just in case.

John, no car for me but several of the members have interest in phonos or radios so there were some good questions.

Bruce, I know we've talked about the "½ a side rule" before but they seemed really attentive. Either that or so full of Mexican food that they couldn't move!
