Delightful! I believe there is a ten-inch Victor version of about 1903 (also issued by Gramophone & Typewriter in Britain); is that the one used here? I have a Berliner of 1898, inevitably taken much faster.

I have often wondered what persuaded such a great artist as Frieda Hempel to record it. What was she thinking?
Even given Edison's fondness for homespun music, his decision to release it on Royal Purple 29023 surely reflected the status of the singer, not the song.

Rosa Ponselle recorded it too. But that was in her early days at Columbia.
