I am not really familiar with these Columbia's. For the life of me I cannot figure out how the tone arm secures in. A couple if my buddies tried to explain over the phone, but I still cannot see how it will work. Is this the right tone arm? I have the small set screw in the back, but without the tonearm recessing I cannot see how it will keep it in.

Find a rod that fits through the little holes in the tone arm near the opening. A finish nail with the head cut off and to a correct length will work fine. The length should be long enough to fit into the channel of the back bracket and and allow the other end to drop into the opening of the bracket. This piece will pivot in the channel and provide support for the tone arm. Once that length is determined, cut the nail and stick in through the little holes in the tone arm near the opening. Take the tone arm and place one end of the rod into the channel and the other end down through the opening. Now rotate the tone arm clockwise and it will be both in a position to play a record and also in a position that will remain in the back bracket with minimal friction. Hope this helps. As Jerry said, cut a finish nail long enough to fit the slot on the backmount. Then push it through the tonearm, leaving equal ends sticking out of both sides, then use the "insertion slot" on the mount to guide the nail into the slot...

YES!!!!! Thank you very much! I did exactly what y'all had proposed. I cut a finishing nail to the right size and that worked perfectly, it is now singing like a bird now.

I replaced the spring and cleaned up the motor for a buddy of mine. He should like it now.
