Help, Please! Odd Columbia AA Problem

I am working on a Columbia AA. The motor is much like that of a Columbia Eagle. It's all back together, but when I wind it up, the springs don't hold tension. If, however, I grab the spring barrel and hold them, the springs wind up and the motor will spin. Obviously, this is rather inconvenient! What am I overlooking?
Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the AA motor, but it sounds like the ratchet pawl is not engaging...

Or perhaps a gear slipping on its shaft in the spring barrel chain?

I think I know the problem (my fault), but I won't be able to get back to this until Monday. Busy weekend, but I will report with a full confession when it's done.

I think one of you springs is broken or unhooked.

If the spring was broken or unhooked, it wouldn't wind up if you held the spring barrel...

Depending on what spring is broken/unhooked, yes it would.

On a single spring motor, like a Columbia B, as noted?

A Columbia B is a two spring motor.

Thanks for the clarification... what do I know?
