Which to buy, a HMV 101 or 102?

Hi everyone :)

I was speaking to Orthosean today and I have decided that the time is right for me to upgrade my Columbia Grafonola 109a portable, and replace it with a HMV model.

The trouble is, I don't know which to buy - the 101 or 102. I was wondering if any members who have experience with such machines could vouch either one of them to help me make my choice?

Thanks!

I have a couple of each, and I like both models. I prefer the appearance of the 101 (square edges). Performance wise, although the 101 is quite good due to its long horn, the 102 is better for electrically recorded records if equipped with a 5a or 5b soundbox. Avoid the #16 soundbox, since it is pressed together and difficult (if not impossible) to easily repair.

Many people feel that the 102 is the best portable ever made. The colored models are typically more expensive than the more common black ones. Of course they sound the same.

Some 102s came with a record tray, and some didn't. It is often missing.

I like both - and since my father is reluctant to give me my 102 back, I use the 101 regularly!

I'd go with the 102 only because it will easily handle records from any era. Best to go with the 5a or 5b reproducer. Excellent sound with either.

I would also go for the 102.
Your 109 is a fairly well designed portable which uses a mica diaphragmed soundbox, so the 101 wont be a vast improvement in sound quality compared to the 102.
The earliest version of the 101, with front wind & 400 series motor tend to be a little under powered IMO, and the last version with auto brake, also has a pot metal soundbox which is something to avoid.
The 102 is a more reliable and much better sounding machine.

Hmm, I'm not bothered by colour so I can save my costs there. Looks like the 102 it is!

Like AZ has said, the 101 is a better looking machine and has a far more 'vintage' look about it. If I had to choose between the two, I'd plump for the 101. It depends on whether you have other significantly better machines to play your records on or not. If you are solely relying on this portable to play most records, then I'd agree, go for the 102. However, with certain records the difference in sound between the two models is almost inaudible. I think the 101 was better put together and better designed BUT I wouldn;t want to have to listen to all my records on it either!

Steve, I usually play my records on my modern equipment with a lightweight pickup which has the advantage of volume control! Since I live in a terraced house it's always an issue. I'd love a 102 for summer picnics and whatnot :)
