Gang,

Was there any reason that Some Diamond Disc Records start at 80000 ? I have some and they have the "regular" artists that the ones starting at 50,000 do.

Diamond Discs were issued in series. The 50000 series is the "popular" series. The 80000 range has several sub-series, which are semi-classical or classical in general. The higher series numbers were more expensive. There were some artists who record in both series, but the majority would be one or the other.

Like Victor, who priced their records by numerical group, Edison used a number of price groups.

50001 - 52651 (approx) Popular

57000 - 78000 Various foreign language titles

80001 - 80907 Light and semi-classical

82001 - 82360 Classical or better name artists

82501 - 82573 Classical or better name artists

83001 - 83087 Classical or better name artists (typically operatic)

84001 Quartet from Rigoletto (only issue in series)

They originally had plans for 10” records into the 85000 and 86000 series and 12” records in the 90000 - 96000 blocks, but these were never issued.

Also like Victor, some of the artists appeared in more than one block or series. In fact, such Victor artists as Lucy Marsh, Lambert Murphy, Reinald Werrenrath and Harry Lauder appeared on all four of Victor’s major label colors - Black, Blue, Purple and Red, though they were not always listed by name. In Lauder’s case, he was.
