Picked this up over the weekend, as part of a set. It's the Victor batwing American Quartet version, with, of course, Billy Murray. Is this the most "common" version of this WWI classic?

I don't know about on 78s, but I've found many copies of it on Blue Amberol cylinders--it's quite common on that format. Which is good, because it's a great tune.

Just happy to have this one, as an example of WW1 music. I know John McCormack recorded it, also. But there look to be many others.

There are lots of WWI records still out there--Travis on this board (goes by travisgreyfox) really has a good collection, as does Ben (PinnacleReproducer.)

I really want to get Caruso's "Over There", but seems less common, and quite expensive when it pops up.

I always think of John McCormack's version, recorded for Victor not long after the American Quartet.

Both versions sold well for Victor. They are probably about equally as common. Though more people now may seek the classic McCormack version so it's not found as much.

You have to enjoy the hokey appeal of the American Quartet, as I do. I have quite a few American Quartet, Peerless Quartet, Sterling Trio, etc. records.

Billy Murray's vocal style is about as subtle as a sledgehammer. But their version is certainly enjoyable enough.

I like the song regardless of who sings it.

The old quartet records sound a lot better than modern "barbershoppers" I think.
