As Iñigo points out, the most interesting of these Vox/Ultraphon machines is the two-arm setup, which this one is unfortunately missing. I presume this machine is rare in the US, but not so in Germany, where it shows up every now and then. I have a table-top model, quite similar to the one above except for the lenght. The arm is made of bakelite and the soundbox wooden. In order to play it you have to place both soundboxes in the groove before starting the movement, otherwise they will be tracking different steps in the groove and produce cacophony. There is a number of variants of these machines, as Vox went under, Ultraphon took over and kept flogging the cilindrical cabinets with different hardware, including single arms (this one is not one of these, as it shows the place for the second arm). Whoever buys this one will have to keep a look in German Ebay for, say, some 10 or 20 years, to eventually find a replacement arm-soundbox.
