I have a HMV pressing of the Mikado & Victor pressings of Pinafore, plus Pirates of Penzance.

Brunswick made rather nice ortho clones.

Setting of the auto brake is a nice touch also.

G&S records are a lot of fun, right? I really want to get back into looking for them. They're just -- They are delightful. The older recordings are closer to the tradition of the 19th-century stage anyway.

I really prefer the Brunswick Panatrope to the Victor Orthophonic. It seems to have a better motor, and the sound is good even with the old acoustical 78s. I've tried out a few Orthophonics some collectors were nice enough to demonstrate for me, and owned a 1930 VV 2-65 for awhile, but they just couldn't cut the mustard when it came to playing an older 78. Great sound on the electricals though. As most of my collection is acoustic, it helps to have a machine that can handle it.

Also, Brunswick consistently offered a better tonearm. Nobody sells replica rear supports for the Panatrope arm, because it's solid brass & doesn't need it. We upgraded the reproducer (I say "we" because I remain in debt to Mr. Jerry van O. for having a spare brass body around, and to Mr Wyatt M. for rebuilding it) and this little machine wants but two new mainsprings and a Delrin drive gear to be entropy-proof. I guess it would be like having a great Credenza or something that someone swapped the reproducer & support for.

I guess with the Orthophonic Victrola, the Panatrope, the Viva-tonal Grafonola, and all the rest we really have a lot of great choices when it's time to buy a post-1925 record player.

It is a fun tune. Reminds me of a Disney cartoon movie song Circa the 1990s or something.

I found playback to be sounding a bit "tinny" and then noticed the operator kept the horn doors closed throughout.

It seemed a bit tinny to me too. I always play my cabinet machines with doors open/lid closed. I prefer how that sounds. It seems that many youtube posters like to see the record spinning around for some reason.

I've recorded some videos with my phone, but using a pair of earphones with mic, which I installed at the centre of the horn opening. Instead of my preinstalled camera app, which doesn't allow to use an external mic, I downloaded Open Camera, which allows recording from the earphone mic, so I can focus the camera on the record while recording directly from the horn.

Thanks, although Nelson Eddy and G&S just don’t fit as far as I’m concerned. I have about 2 dozen complete sets on Victor, HMV, and Columbia (along with another few dozen LP sets or single records of G&S).
