HMV 163 TONEARM

Hello,

I have recently acquired an HMV 163 and I am wondering how the air tight seal should be made on the tonearm where it meets the horn. The only way I can see is to grease the connecting sleeve but this then introduces friction to the arm. I am new to gramophones but from what I have read the tonearm should be as friction free as possible. Any advice please.

Thanks,
Bill

I grease profusely that connecting sleeve, plus its seat on the tonearm base. The drag introduced in the tonearm at the base is not noticeable at the needle point.
If you don't grease that joint... You may also use grease to seal the base, and oil in the sleeve cylinder where it enters the tonearm and slides into it.
The airtightness of these seals is fundamental for a good sound.

Thanks for reply Inigo. I will assemble with plenty of grease tomorrow.
