If you've been wondering whether the Wayne show will be held in October, unfortunately it won't be. The APS magazine had an ad indicating that the promoter will "plan to resume the show Spring 2022".

Good move considering the Delta variant COVID surge in New Jersey! I am also thinking that 2022 will also be too soon to hold the show due to the potential for the vaccine resistant Lambda and Mu COVID variants to rear their ugly heads by then. I honestly think that Fall 2023 would be more realistic for the show to resume, as by then the worst of the COVID variants will be behind us and a higher percentage of people will be vaccinated.

I miss the show, but I agree that they made a good decision. A phonograph show isn’t all that important in the greater scheme of things. It’s not worth any loss of life.

I was just thinking, when Covid is finally under control and not a threat to others (hopefully in 2022) we’re gonna have HUGE flea markets and shows and sales!

I am very comfortable attending phonograph and record shows such as the California Antique Phonograph Society Expo and maybe even the Union Phonograph Show, but I know that because New Jersey has a very high population density, the risk for catch COVID is higher than in other areas of the country. Additionally, the area where the Mechanical Music Extravaganza is held has very low vaccination uptake (mostly due to political reasons) so even though close to 100% of the prospective vendors and attendees are likely vaccinated, the people in the town might not be. I am thinking that instead of an in person Mechanical Music Extravaganza in the future, would it be possible to do either a Zoom based show or maybe even an outdoor show instead?

Not sure how a zoom show would work. How do I browse through boxes full of records over zoom?

There is an informal outdoor show in the parking lot on the Saturday before the official Sunday show, weather permitting of course. Parking is fairly limited so I don't think a large outdoor show would be practical.

You are right that an expanded parking lot show would be difficult to hold at the Wayne PAL, but it might work at another location in the area. There are also some places down where I live that have very big parking areas, but I am unsure if it would be a good idea to move the show to another area of New Jersey. As for the Zoom show idea, I was kind of thinking it would work like either the Stanton Auctions or Kurt Naucks auctions and that each vender would have their own individual Zoom room. Also, a Zoom component could allow some of the attendees or venders to hold presentations on either phonographs, records, or recorded sound history similar to the ones that are held at either ARSC or the California Antique Phonograph Society Expo. Attendance would also likely be higher with a Zoom show, which could help expand awareness of record or phonograph collecting to more people.

I am sorry that we won’t have the show this year—it is local for me and only about 30 miles away—but it seems the right decision given the surge in cases. NJ does vary tremendously in terms of vaccination rates, but there are some areas that are experiencing higher COVID rates now. Things were looking up a few months ago now, but I see cases rising again in the NJ updates. Distancing is difficult in Wayne and I am not sure about ventilation and other factors there either. We can hope that things improve by next spring or even a year from now, but I know that I am restricting my activities here now even after being fully vaccinated.

This is unfortunate news. :( I wish they would just have the show and anyone that is scared can stay home. At this point it looks as though Covid is endemic and will be here forever. Just my thoughts on the matter.
