This would be an incredible amount of work to restore..... and CERTAINLY not worth anywhere near that price.

That's a high-end matching Salter record cabinet beneath that XII. It's a worthwhile restoration project, but the asking price is certainly optimistic. The seller clearly has no idea of what it is, nor its value (current or potential).

It’s not too far from me. But I can’t take on another project. And I certainly don’t feel up to another project that requires stripping tons of paint

That’s a crying shame. In the late 60s, my great aunts refreshed most of their antiques by antiquing them. Why “antique” antiques?

If it's been over the original shellac, then a heat gun would do the lions share of the work.
I've even dry scraped stuff like this before on the larger areas, but the finish underneath has to be intact for that to work.

I really shouldn’t have but I am talking to the seller. Maybe I can workout something with him.

UPDATE: no deal was reached. He thinks it’s fairly priced and won’t come down. He also said his brother told him that the painted finished was custom done from the store

To make them look antique of course!

Antiques are supposed to look all dirty and gobbed up with paint. That's how you now they're antique! The 70's were an odd time indeed... (e.g. Leisure Suits )

These days that's a tough question. I paid $850 for a similar record cabinet for my XII, but it was beautifully refinished by Steve Farmer, AND that was 23 years ago. In its present condition, I'd estimate around $750 for the set now...and I may be overgenerous. The seller's attraction to phono-fiction may prevent a transaction - at least for now. We all learn patience in this hobby!
