Edison Diamond Disc height adjustment help

Post by schweg »

I found the excellent work done by David and read it over but am still having issues with the height of the reproducer on my A-250

http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... ment#p2910

On my machine, the lever that raises and lowers the reproducer is way too high so it doesn't raise or lower anything. I tried loosening the set screws and moving the whole assembly down and I turned the height adjustment pin on the bottom of the whole thing but the raising and lowering wood handled lever still is "frozen". I sprayed some lube on the lift lever base so maybe it'll free up- it is supposed to slide up and down right? Any suggestions so I don't damage anything?

Schweg,

This is so damned hard to describe.

It sounds like you might be doing it correctly except for possibly one thing. The lever that raises/lowers the assembly is attached to a short rod, about 2 inches long. That rod, with set screws near top of post loosened, should slide up/down within the post easily. When I do mine I did it in the following way.

1) Put the raises/lowers lever in perpendicular, (lowered) position. Push into post as far is at will go.
2) Adjust the height adjustment pin so that with lever all the way lowered, reproducer sits at right level.
3) Tighten set screws top & bottom.
4) Now when you raise the lever, reproducer should be in the right position.

Probably you know this but také the reproducer off before starting this. Put reproducer on to test height only after you’ve at least somewhat tightened the set screws or the whole mechanism can fall and bang your diamond into the TT.

Let me know if this helps….

Bruce, I think you've got it. I knew there was something I was not seeing. I'll look at it as soon as I get back from the Thanksgiving visit to OK. I really appreciate your help.

Great, let me know how it goes.

The tricky part is that you've got to do it with the reproducer off to assure you don't damage it, then put the reproducer (and a record) on to test it. If it drops too low, or if set screws are not tight and it comes loose.... bye bye diamond needle!

So be careful of that.

Excellent advice from Bruce! I'll add another tip: those set screws have square heads, so it's natural to use a wrench to loosen/tighten them. Just don't torque them too tightly - - those square heads will twist right off! ...And how do I know this?

.....and that's why I wanted to ask before I messed something up even more than it was when I started. Thanks George for sharing your lesson learned!

Very good point. I've not been so unlucky as to twist one off but I have seen machines where they've been twisted off or worse yet, twisted off then badly drilled out to make a real mess! Probably some machines once owned by George?

  Yeah - I get around!

Fortunately, it happened to me only once, and I was able to fix it without using a drill, but that little faux pas brought me a magical couple of hours...
