The 2022 Midwest Music EXPO, presented by the Antique Phonograph Society, will be held on June 10th, 11th, and 12th at the Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg, IL, just outside of Chicago.

The EXPO promises to be the largest gathering of antique music enthusiasts of the year with dealers and attendees from all parts of the United States and Europe. The EXPO will include traditional buying and selling over two days at the exhibition hall, several social activities including a formal banquet and silent auction, as well as many educational programs for both dealers and EXPO attendees.

The EXPO will have all types of antique musical items including phonographs, gramophones, music boxes, coin-op arcades, early radios, cylinder records, disk records, record cabinets, advertising, ephemera, gifts, and lots of parts for all your restoration needs.

Early entry at the old Union shows was about the same price. I always felt it was well worth it to get early access to everything. After traveling halfway across the country, paying for airfare, hotels, rental car, food etc. the cost of early entry was a pittance.

Yes, early admission is a pittance. I'm looking at over 400 gallons of diesel for my trip.

As a dealer or Early Admission buyer at these shows since 1980, I have found that being present at dealer setup and throughout that first day is a huge advantage - but only if you're a serious buyer interested in more advanced items. Many items see the light of day only briefly as they're unpacked at the show during dealer setup, and almost immediately bought by collectors who then put them in their vehicles. The General Admission folks never even see them. That said, if you're in the market for more pedestrian items, the General Admission will probably suit just as well.

There have been many years at the old Union show when I've realized that all my purchases were made during the dealer setup day (I was either a dealer or early buyer). While cruising around during the first hours of General Admission, I'd realize that I had seen it all. Had I not paid for the Early Buyer admission, I might have gone home empty-handed. But again, I had been collecting for 13 years when I attended my first show, so I wasn't looking for commonly-found items.

Despite my earlier "riff-raff" comment -- which was intended to be humorous -- I wholeheartedly agree with George's assessment.

I attended the Donley's Union show for 30 consecutive years, always as an early buyer. Some of the finest items in my collection were purchased during the first few moments after the doors opened during dealer setup. Other times, I saw an item as it was being unloaded in the parking lot, and bought it before it made it onto the sales floor. I doubt that more than a handful of people saw it before I loaded it into the van. You have to know what you want, and be willing to pay the asking price or very close to it. If you wait to think about it, someone else will snap it up. Don't expect bargain prices on rare or quality items. Most dealers know what they have and have set their prices accordingly. The bargains come later in the show on what George refers to as "pedestrian items" like Edison Standards & Homes and the like.
