U.S. Phonograph Retro-Fit?

Hi Guys,
I see so many U.S. Phonographs, looking in excellent shape, except for bad or missing pot-metal carriages.
Has anyone successfully attempted to use another common, Edison, Columbia, or other carriage, to make these machines work?
If so, I would love to see a working example.
