Instructions for using Brunswick Ultona 3-way reproducer ?

When I was working Brunswick Ultona, freeing the reproducer head so it could swivel, I noticed that the taper-tube / tone-arm has a telescoping function, with a guide-screw / slot that includes a lock nut.

Is this supposed to telescope in / out freely, or locked-down in one position for all records, or is there a different set-up depending on which format disc we're playing ?

Is there an instruction manual on-line somewhere ?

My particular machine is a model 117 upright.

Thanks !
