Someone in antiquity expended considerable time and effort increasing the height of this Decca 50 case, presumably to enable the machine to play with the lid shut. Unfortunately they failed to create an opening for the sound to emerge.

Now, if they had thought to leave the latches in the lower position, and put hinges on the extra piece so they could open it like a flap...
