Is this an original one-off, or a black one that's been assaulted with a can of purple spray paint, and one of gold? I know what I think!

My vote: paint - both purple & gold.

Definitely paint and paint. Someone did strive to do a nice job, but somehow missed the back of the hinge and some of the outside corner fasteners.

This 101 is an unfortunate example of misdirected effort, and it is not only the colour which is not original.
The case has the old style carrying handle and escutcheon cover plate, but the later 102 style winding handle clips.

It must have belonged to Ritchie Blackmore!

I wonder why the horn was left black? Ran out of purple paint, maybe?
