To add to the rare variations on Edison Automatic Reproducers, find one that has not been documented. The Reed Automatic Reproducer.

Amazing, this one is not only marked what it is for (Edison Speakers) it has a Serial Number.

Is it possible that the inventor was Thompson Reed from Missouri? I don't think the Patent was actually "granted."

You are the expert on patents. What you suggest, could be true.

As to the serial number, the construction of the top is not consistent with a very early Automatic, which it would be at Serial Number 30096. The Reed Automatic top has the "funnel" interior in the reproducer throat, where a early Automatic has straight sides.

As well, The stamping is consistent across all letters and numbers.

With these two facts, I believe this to be a Reed manufactured top, with a Reed serial number. Quite unique in reproducer "upgrades"

The other option is that Reed replaced the reproducer throat, and stamped an existing Edison top. In that case, the serial number could be from EDISON on the automatic. While plausible, it would have been much easier for Reed to have made a whole new top.
