There’s an upcoming 4 part documentary on The History Channel about the Harlem Hellfighters in WWI and Jim Europe introducing jazz to France.

I’m not sure when the airdate is but I’m definitely watching!

Every once in awhile, I wish I still had cable. I'd love to see that. James Reese Europe was a remarkable man that met a very tragic end. One can only wonder what he would have accomplished had he lived longer.

I remember reading that Europe got into a fight with one of his musicians. I have one of the Pathés, How Ya Gonna Keep Em Down On The Farm, with vocal chorus by Noble Sissle edisonplayer.

I'm looking forward to watching this. I hope they do this story justice and not mess it up. Hopefully they have Marion Harris's version of Goodbye Alexander in the soundtrack.

Yes, he was in an altercation with a deranged band member (drummer as I recall) who thought Europe cheated him out of money. Stabbed in the neck, he told everyone he was ok and took himself to the hospital. He died within an hour of arriving. This happened in Boston in 1919, not long after he arrived home from the war. I've owned a few of his records over the years, and recently acquired this one from a friend.
